Bale & James shine in rout

Gareth Bale and James Rodriguez each grabbed a brace as Real Madrid silenced last week's critics with a 5-0 demolition of Real Betis on Saturday.

Rafa Benitez made two changes from the side which could only draw 0-0 with Sporting Gijon on the opening day as James and Karim Benzema both returned at the expense of Isco and Jese.

Betis, meanwhile, welcomed Dani Ceballos back into the fold after the reported Madrid target was only good enough for a late cameo against Villarreal last week, Pepe Mel claiming the youngster was not in the right state of mind.

Inside just two minutes, Bale went some way towards silencing speculation about a blockbuster swap move with David de Gea by powering a header past former Madrid goalkeeper Antonio Adan from James' pinpoint delivery.

Madrid proceeded to enjoy the lion's share of possession and chances in the first half, Benzema and Ronaldo being denied by their former teammate in one-on-one situations.

Nonetheless, James doubled the side's lead via a sensational free kick from a tight angle, which clipped the far post en route to the back of the net.

However, Betis spurned a glorious opportunity to pull one back just before half-time as prolific veteran Ruben Castro was a split-second too late to react to Francisco Molinero's cross in the Madrid box.

Within moments of the second half kicking off, James was once more the architect, finding Bale at the right-hand byline, the Welshman clipping an inch-perfect cross onto Benzema's head and the latter knocking the ball past Adan.

Shortly after, the Colombian capped off a memorable display as he met Ronaldo's chip in the box and unleashed a fabulous overhead kick from point-blank range, leaving Adan with no choice other than to pick the ball out.

Betis were then presented with a welcome reprieve as Raphael Varane conceded a penalty for questionably throwing a leg at substitute Jorge Molina, but Keylor Navas guessed right to keep out Castro's tame attempt.

In the dying embers, Sergio Ramos almost made it a second overhead kick for Madrid as his effort cannoned off the post, but Los Blanco would nonetheless grab a fifth goal, Bale sending an unstoppable strike in off the post from Casemiro's backheeled assist.
