‘Madrid can’t score? A joke…’

Real Betis Coach Pepe Mel has no time for anyone who suggests Real Madrid don’t have goals in the team. ‘It makes me laugh…’

Betis travel to Santiago Bernabeu for the Saturday evening fixture amid complaints from some sections of the capital that Rafa Benitez has made the team too defensive.

“I’d ask people to be patient. But Rafa knows the club, as I do. Leagues aren’t won in August or September but day by day,” Mel said on Onda Cero, AS reports.

“Luis Enrique last year is the best example of that.

“It makes me laugh to hear Madrid have no goals. It seems like a joke because they have [Cristiano Ronaldo] who himself will score more goals than 15 Primera teams.

“I like the people at Sporting but I wish Madrid had won there, because now we take on an angry bull.

“Madrid didn’t win or score in their first game so it’s a doubly special game at home. I don’t know if it’s science fiction but we have to take the game to them.

“But with fast players like Cristiano and Gareth Bale we can’t leave spaces. We have to be compact.

“Karim Benzema? He could have waited until Monday to come back…He’s the one who makes things click. He’s Cristiano’s best partner, with invisible one-twos, dropping deep and scoring important goals.

“I’ve been in the Premier League and I know he would have been an ideal player for Arsenal.”
