Valverde: Calendar change helps no one

Ernesto Valverde has offered his thoughts on the proposed change to the Primera calendar that would see matches played on New Year’s Eve.

The players’ union, the AFE, suggested only days before the start of the season that round 17, scheduled for early January, instead be played on December 30 and 31.

It would represent the third calendar for the season and move the final round of games back to May 15, their original date, after the Sports Council [CSD] extended the season by a week.

The intention is to give Vicente del Bosque an extra week to work with his players, assuming Spain qualify for Euro 2016, but Valverde isn’t impressed with the lack of organisation that has been displayed.

“I think this war between [the RFEF and the LFP] in the end is to the detriment of everyone,” he said, Marca reports.

“I have a feeling the League could have started a week earlier and we could have avoided these problems.

“We can’t be changing the schedule four days before the start. If it’s to give more time to the national team, then start earlier, as was expected.”
