La Liga dates to change again

The Spanish football calendar is expected to undergo yet another revision with games to be played on December 30 and 31.

A proposal from the AFE, the players’ union, is expected to be agreed to by the LFP in order to ensure the season ends on May 15, with the Copa del Rey final the following weekend.

The AFE propose moving round 17 from early January to late December and it’s thought the RFEF will agree to the change in order to give Vicente del Bosque another week to prepare his squad for Euro 2016, should Spain qualify.

AS notes that games on December 31 would be 6pm local time starts, so players could still celebrate New Year with their families, and Marca adds that some of the games scheduled for round 17 are between clubs geographically close together.

Round 17 includes Villarreal hosting Valencia and Atletico Madrid visiting Rayo Vallecano, matches that could be played on December 31 due to the short travelling required.

Marca also notes that the AFE’s intervention comes after the Sports Council [CSD] intervened in the original calendar and extended it by a week, a change announced on August 11.

The latest change to the calendar comes a matter of days before the new Primera season gets underway, with the first game, Sevilla’s trip to Malaga, on Friday evening.
