Javier Mascherano has claimed that Athletic Bilbao’s 4-0 victory over Barcelona in the Supercopa first leg on Friday was the result of “timely opportunism”.
La Blaugrana have a mountain to climb if they are to secure their fifth trophy of 2015 after collapsing at San Mames, but the midfielder insists his side have what it takes to stage the ultimate comeback on home soil.
“We won’t give up. We can still come back and win the trophy,” he told Telecinco.
“Nothing’s been decided yet. We still have to play at home. We’ve won a lot of games by big margins.
“It will be a tough game because our opponents are strong, but we have the benefit of playing at home.
“[Athletic’s four goals] were cases of timely opportunism. They had three or four chances and scored four goals.
“We had some chances, but now we must focus on correcting what went wrong. Above all, we must have faith to come back from this.”
