Mascherano ‘committed to Barca’

Javier Mascherano moved to quash any doubts about his Barcelona future amid links to Serie A. ‘My commitment is clear.’

Sport notes Mascherano was reportedly in talks with a host of Italian clubs only days after being voted as one of the Barcelona captains.

“I know there have been other teams interested but my commitment to Barca is clear. It’s the same as it’s always been and will be until the last day I spend here,” he promised.

Marca further quotes Mascherano discussing the award of the captaincy, the Argentina international stressing that he won’t have to change his style when he wears the armband.

“It’s a great joy. It’s not easy to get to a club like Barcelona and having players so identified with the club and so important to the history of the club,” he acknowledged.

“I appreciate the confidence but you don’t have to be captain to give an opinion.”

Mascherano also noted the state of the team as the season approaches, commending the Joan Gamper Trophy performance against Roma, Barca winning 3-0.

“We were good even though there were players just returned from their vacation and hadn’t played yet,” he added.
