Villarreal close in on Soldado

Villarreal are reportedly closing in on a deal for out-of-favour Tottenham Hotspur striker Roberto Soldado.

The Yellow Submarine are in need of attacking reinforcements following the exits of Luciano Vietto, Ikechukwu Uche and Giovani dos Santos, with only Leo Baptistao brought in, and Marca claims they could announce the 29-year-old’s arrival as early as next week.

Soldado, who has 12 caps and seven goals for Spain, joined Tottenham in the summer of 2013 for €30m but has scored just seven times in the Premier League.

However, he is still highly rated in his native Spain, having begun his career at Real Madrid, before going on to enjoy prolific spells with Getafe and Valencia.

Villarreal boss Marcelino recently told a Press conference: “We only look for players who are capable of competing for a starting place.”

Spurs are understood to be holding out for €17m, a considerable hit on their initial outlay, but it remains to be seen whether Villarreal will meet their asking price.
