Former Spain striker Dani Guiza was subjected to ‘die’ chants from Cadiz supporters at his official unveiling with the Segunda B club on Saturday.
The 34-year-old, a Euro 2008 winner with La Roja, once commented that he would never wear the Cadiz jersey out of respect for neighbours Xerez, the team of his birth and where he began his career.
“The first thing I want to do is ask for forgiveness,” he began.
“I have said many silly things in the past, but I’ll sweat blood for this shirt to help the team achieve promotion [to La Segunda].
“I was young and immature, but I have learned many things since then and I can’t do any more other than apologise and win promotion.
“I’m going to focus on my game and help my teammates to achieve our objective [of promotion].
“I won’t take notice of the insults. My job is to play and do my best.
“I didn’t hesitate [to say ‘yes’] when I received the offer. I knew I made a mistake [with my comments] turned down many offers from abroad to sweat blood for this shirt.
“I promise to work hard, and hopefully the goals will follow. I’m going to focus on fighting for the badge. If I have to kiss the badge then I will.”
Guiza, who last played for Paraguayan side Cerro Porteno, along with the likes of Mallorca, Getafe and Fenerbahce, has signed a one-year contract with Cadiz.
