Simeone hails Atleti progress

Diego Simeone believes Atletico Madrid have the potential to “improve greatly” next season following Saturday’s penalties victory over Sagan Tosu.

Koke’s goal straight from a corner was cancelled out late in the second half, but Los Colchoneros – who began the friendly with a new-look 4-3-3 formation – ultimately emerged triumphant from the spot in sudden death.

“I’m happy because the team are improving. The team combined well going forward,” the Coach said after the game.

“The feeling is good. We intended to try out a different system, which we’ve been using regularly [in training].

“The team struggled at first, but we finished the first half well. [The 4-3-3 created some] interesting situations.

“It was a great strike from Koke.  We know that when you hit the ball and it gets increasingly closer to the goal, it’s very dangerous for the goalkeeper because he can’t measure the trajectory.

“Surely the game will be remembered for Koke’s goal.

“We know [Luciano] Vietto, [Angel] Correa, [Yannick] Carrasco and Oliver [Torres] can greatly improve the team.

“We still have to improve a lot, especially from a tactical perspective, but the players will never lose their talent.

“This talent is necessary for winning games.”
