Torres craving Atleti glory

Fernando Torres has confessed that he craves glory with Atletico Madrid but denied being “envious” of his more-decorated teammates.

The 30-year-old returned to the Vicente Calderon midway through last season, having left for Liverpool in 2007, but he insists he has no regrets about leaving the club in the past and now hopes to make up for lost time.

“Last season, we wanted to qualify for the Champions League. Now, we have to improve on what has been achieved,” he said at a Press conference on Friday.

“There’s a lot of competition and, for that, we’ll do better. We’re all ambitious, but I don’t envy those who have won trophies with Atletico.

“I admire Raul Garcia, Koke and Gabi as I did Kiko [Narvaez], [Milinko] Pantic, [Jose Luis Caminero] and the other players who won the double.

“My colleagues have marked the path of this club. This is the real Atleti and I can only admire them.

“I still have trophies to win and I want to win them here. It’s a way to give back what the fans have given me.

“Hopefully I can experience those triumphs here. My teammates know the way and I just have to follow them.

“It’s normal that people have arrived. The competition will be great because there are not many players for many positions.

“This kind of competition is what gives you success, neither will we settle for anything other than playing, so the decisions [on personnel] lie with the Coach.

“Atletico are my home, I was born and raised here. Now, I have the chance to play for the team I want, which isn’t always easy.

“This season, we want take a leap forward. We’re very ambitious and we want to achieve important things.”
