‘Barca’s shirt doesn’t win trophies’

Sevilla goalkeeper Beto warns Barcelona they will have to do more than merely turn up to win the UEFA Super Cup.

The Europa League-winning Rojiblancos meet Champions League holders Barca in Georgia in late August in the annual showpiece, and Beto is expecting a competitive encounter.

“[Barcelona’s] shirt alone doesn’t win trophies. Sevilla earned everyone’s respect and that of Barcelona,” the goalkeeper said, AS reports.

“It’s a European final and while we respect Barca as a great team, we’re Sevilla and I think it’ll be a great game. I hope to lift the trophy.”

Beto also touched on his Sevilla prospects, most of all his rivalry with Sergio Rico to be Unai Emery’s starting goalkeeper.

“Competition is always good in all positions. It provides more options. There are a lot of games and there’ll be rotations,” he predicted.

“Whether the club signs a new goalkeeper or not is up to them. They’ll sign one if they don’t trust either of us…

“My intention is to continue at Sevilla for as long as I can. I’ve been treated very well in this city. I’m a happy player, and a happy person. I’ve found the stability I wanted in a wonderful city.

“What we want is to always improve and grow. That’s the mentality of Sevilla and of Unai. We can do even better. We can look for another trophy this year. Why not?”
