Sergio Ramos has reportedly agreed a five-year contract with Real Madrid that pays less than the offer from Manchester United.
Marca reports the centre-back has come to terms with Los Blancos after a summer of unrest that began with a disagreement over Ramos’ new deal.
Ramos and Madrid sat down to talk about a contract extension early in the summer and Ramos always wanted to stay at Santiago Bernabeu.
However, Ramos received an offer of €12m-a-year from United and told Madrid about it, the club replying they couldn’t match it.
Madrid then leaked to the Press their offer of €10m-a-year and it was from there the relationship between Ramos and Madrid began to falter.
Ramos’ brother and agent, Rene Ramos, came in for criticism regarding the negotiations and Sergio felt disrespected by Madrid because of the leak, and asked the club to let him join United.
Madrid always stood firm, however, initially asking for €100m to let him go, and then told Ramos outright he was not for sale.
Ramos waited to speak with Florentino Perez and it was at the meeting with the President that the situation improved, Perez assuring Ramos of his value and importance to Madrid, and of the respect the club has for him.
Perez also made an improved contract offer, one Marca reports is worth between €2m and €3m less than the offer from United, but Ramos always wanted to stay at the Bernabeu regardless.
It was this week reported in England that United had come to the belief Ramos had used their interest to manipulate Madrid into making a better offer.
Marca say that Ramos is now likely to retire at Madrid after adding three years to the duration of his deal, the previous contract expiring in 2017.
Ramos is set to be paid some €9m-a-year, with bonuses for games played and trophies won during his time as captain.
The former Sevilla player takes over the armband from Iker Casillas, who earlier in the summer left Madrid for Porto.
