‘Madrid must pay €40m for De Gea’

An unnamed Manchester United source reportedly claims David de Gea “has a unique opportunity to join Real Madrid” but cannot leave for “just any price”.

The goalkeeper continues to be heavily linked with Los Blancos, despite Kiko Casilla’s recent move from Espanyol, but a disagreement over a transfer fee is understood to have prevented a deal from being struck, with the Red Devils holding out for €40m.

“I don’t understand why Real Madrid don’t want to pay up. If they really want De Gea, they must pay the asking price [of €40m], but suddenly they’ve gone quiet,” the source was quoted as telling Marca.

“We understand that our goalkeeper has a unique opportunity to join Real Madrid. It’s his call and we can’t help that, but [he can’t leave for] just any price.

“We understand that we’re in the market period, but it’s unsettling not knowing who will be our goalkeepers next season.

“The best thing for everyone would be for a deal to be agreed as soon as possible so the two clubs can finalise their squads [for next season] and that the player has a peace of mind.”
