Pepe not thinking about renewal

Pepe has made it clear that his sole focus is geared towards helping Real Madrid enjoy success next season, despite his contract running down.

The defender’s deal expires next summer and no extension has yet been forthcoming, with reports in the Spanish Press speculating that a collision course could be on the horizon, but he insists he is happy to leave the matter to his agent and President Florentino Perez.

“[Sergio Ramos] has looked good [in training] and no Madridista is thinking about a Madrid without Sergio,“ the 32-year-old said ahead of Los Blancos’ International Champions Cup friendly against Inter on Monday.

“He’s our captain and I’m sure will stay with us. He loves the club and we also love him very much.

“I hope he stays because he’s our captain and reference point.

“I’m happy to work every day at this club, my agent and the President are the people who will deal with [my renewal].

“What I’m hoping for is that we win trophies this year, and I’m only thinking about that right now.

“The most important thing is to be in good shape for the first League match of the season, and we’re gathering pace.

“Every Coach has their own mentality, the whole team are hard and embracing what the Coach is asking of us. Rafa [Benitez] wants the team to work a lot.”
