Benitez delighted with progress

Rafa Benitez believes Real Madrid are on the road to realising their potential under his leadership following their 4-1 victory over Manchester City on Friday.

Los Blancos lifted the International Champions Cup in Melbourne, having raced to a 3-0 lead before half-time, thanks to goals from Karim Benzema, Cristiano Ronaldo and Pepe, before holding on for an emphatic win as Denis Cheryshev came off the substitutes' bench to cancel out Yaya Toure's penalty.

"It was a good game, the team did enough good things in both attack and defence," the Coach said after the game.

"I must make it clear that we're still in pre-season, a time of preparation, but to see the team play the way they did, show organisation and remain at their level after changes were made is always positive.

"The two teams made many changes [in the second half], and in the end what counted were the little details and things that we'd been working on in training.

"As I've said many times, we're a team with a lot of quality, and we must look to seize [on our quality] and improve that little bit defensively.

"The team did well defensively. I didn't like the goal [we conceded], because no-one likes to concede.

"The hand [for Toure's penalty] was outside the area, but we could have done a little better to stop [City] from reaching our box.

"In the second half, [City] were very strong down the right-hand side and made life more difficult for us, but overall we were fine without giving away many dangerous situations. We were very responsive.

"My experience of such long journeys during pre-season has generally been difficult, but we wanted to work well in Australia because the conditions were perfect.

"We've made every effort and all our objectives [for the trip] have been met. Now, we have to travel, train and play a match in China in three days' time.

"That becomes more difficult for us as it'll be hot and humid there."
