Elche to learn fate on Tuesday

Elche’s case to be reinstated into La Liga will be heard by Spain’s National Court at 12:20 CET on Tuesday.

Last week, Judge Eva Maria Alfageme Almena granted the Valencians an injunction against the Court of Arbitration for Sport’s decision to demote the club on the grounds of unpaid tax debts to Spanish treasury Hacienda.

“Tomorrow [Tuesday] will be the latest to decide whether Elche play in La Liga next season,” he told AS.

LFP President Javier Tebas, who took the initial decision of relegating Elche to La Segunda, was spotted at the court premises on Monday, along with Elche President Juan Anguix and Eibar equivalent Alex Aranzabal among others connected to the case.

Aranzabal is confident that the case will remain in the Basques favour, having told the newspaper: “We’re optimistic. We believe in the economic controls and rules of the League.”

The crux of the decision could hinge on the interpretation of Article 76 of Spain’s Sports Act, which states that clubs must keep up with their payments to the treasury.

“For many years, we failed to punish League clubs for debts to Hacineda. Under [Javier Tebas, that has changed,” AS cites from a source.
