Espanyol confirm Asensio interest

Joan Collet has confirmed Espanyol’s interest in signing Real Madrid starlet Marco Asensio following Kiko Casilla’s move the other way on Friday.

The attacking midfielder, 19, played a starring role in Spain Under-19’s run to the European U19 Championship final, scoring a late brace in La Roja’s 2-0 win against France on Thursday, but has yet to make his debut for Los Blancos since joining from Mallorca last winter.

“Espanyol are trying but struggling to sign Marco Asensio,” the President [pictured, centre] said at Casilla’s farewell Press conference.

“There won’t be a decision until mid-August. We can’t link Casilla’s sale to the signing of Asensio, but this is an objective that we’ll fight for until the end.

“Espanyol are interested in a deal, but nothing has been finalised yet. As soon as Madrid decide to allow the player to leave, Espanyol will be there. We’re optimistic.

“We didn’t expect to lose [Espanyol] but wish him all the luck in the world, just less so when he plays against Espanyol.”

Espanyol will now look to set up their recruitment drive, with captain Sergio Garcia, striker Christian Stuani and winger Lucas Vazquez also departing Cornella-El Prat this summer.
