‘Ramos can be great Madrid captain’

Rafa Benitez has hailed Sergio Ramos’ professionalism in light of speculation about his future and believes he can be a “great” Real Madrid captain.

The defender has been heavily linked with Manchester United in recent times after reportedly growing unhappy with life in the Spanish capital, but his Coach is adamant that he will stay and prove a capable heir to Iker Casillas in wearing the armband.

“Sergio trains sensationally, and I was told [beforehand] that he was a great professional, but it’s a great satisfaction to see how he gets involved and works every day,” he said at a Press conference ahead of Los Blancos’ International Champions Cup opener against Roma on Saturday.

“I think the President has already said that he’ll stay here. If so, I’ll be the happiest man in the world because he’s a great professional and player, and with the level of involvement and motivation that I see from him, I think he can be a great captain.

“I spoke to him earlier in the summer about his future and our respective ideas, and we haven’t spoken about them since.

“My only concern for now is that he trains well, and he’s doing that. I see our future with Sergio because he’s a key player due to his quality on the pitch, mentality and leadership in the dressing room.”
