Casillas’ mother apologises to Porto

The mother of Iker Casillas has spoken of her regret after branding Porto as “a Segunda B team”.

Maria del Carmen Fernandez, along with the goalkeeper’s father Jose Luis Casillas, launched a stinging outburst towards Los Blancos and President Florentino Perez at the weekend for deliberately engineering her son’s transfer to a team not befitting of his abilities.

However, she has since admitted her comments were made in the heat of the moment and thanked the Portuguese giants for giving the 34-year-old the opportunity to enjoy further success in his career.

“I want to thank Porto for signing my son,” she told Cadena COPE.

“I hope his work will contribute to the success of the club. I want to apologise [for my outburst] a thousand times. I hope my son can enjoy as much success [at Porto] as he did in Madrid.

“I think the fans have always been close to my son. I’ve lived through his matches and felt [the fans’] support when they cheered my son.

“It was thrilling. I think most of them adore him, love him and will remain on his mind.

“I’m still very overwhelmed [referring to her relationship with Florentino Perez]. There’s been very strong tension [between us] over the years, but I don’t want to get into any more debates.

“That affected me a lot. His pressure was also mine. It’s been a hard time for me.”
