Fernandez set for Madrid role

Real Madrid are set to appoint former Deportivo La Coruna boss Victor Fernandez as their new training director in a bid to revive the club’s youth system.

According to Marca, the 54-year-old will preside over all players and Coaches at Los Blancos’ Valdebebas training complex, barring the first team.

Madrid Castilla’s failure to return to La Segunda last season has prompted the club to launch a significant overhaul of their youth processes, although Zinedine Zidane will remain in charge.

Elsewhere, Juni Calafat will assume youth recruitment and scouting duties, Ramon Martinez will deal with bureaucratic issues such as contracts and relations with agents and parents, while Luis Llopis has been brought in from Levante to oversee goalkeeping development.

Fernandez has vast experience in La Liga management with the likes of Real Zaragoza, Celta Vigo and Real Betis, along with Depor, who dismissed him in April.
