Guardiola back at Bayern

Pep Guardiola today returned to work at Bayern Munich and conducted his first Press conference of pre-season.

The former Barcelona boss is preparing for his third season in charge of the German champions, with his side out to make history this term.

“No team have ever won the Bundesliga four times in a row,” Guardiola told the assembled media. “That only proves one thing: to do it is very difficult.”

The man who led Barca to two Champions League titles then cast his eye over Bayern’s domestic rivals.

“Dortmund have a new Coach and that could give them a boost. Gladbach are now coming to show their capabilities.

“Leverkusen have a second season with (Coach) Schmidt who now knows his players better. Wolfsburg had a great season and Schalke need to come back.”

Guardiola was also questioned about the recent signing of Douglas Costa, adding that he was grateful to the club for securing his signature.

“We had to do without important players like Arjen (Robben) and Franck (Ribery) at important times (last season). That made the club think about a signing like this. I thank those responsible for the signing. I hope he can adapt quickly.”

Costa arrives at Allianz Arena from Ukrainian club Shakhtar Donetsk, but his new Coach dismissed suggestions that he will take more time to adapt, having previously played in a supposedly weaker domestic League.

“That doesn’t matter. At Barcelona Busquets and Pedro had played in the fourth division and then they won the Champions League and were world champions!

“The important thing is not the League you come from, but your quality.”
