AFE, LFP row over League start date

There is disagreement over whether the first round of League games in the 2015-16 season should start on August 15 or August 22.

AS reports the LFP wants to kick off the new campaign on August 15 but the players’ union, the AFE, are of the belief that a week later would be better, when temperatures might be cooler.

The AFE point out that the collective agreement that governs Spanish football says the start date has to be agreed with the RFEF and the AFE.

The calendar is due to be drawn up on July 14 and if the two parties can’t reach accord, the Secretary of State for Sport, Miguel Cardenal, will step in.

Barcelona’s involvement in both the European Super Cup and the Supercopa is also a factor, as they and Sevilla are due in Georgia for the former fixture on August 11.

Athletic Bilbao’s involvement in the early stages of the Europa League is also an issue as they are due to play on July 30 and August 6.

Barcelona also want time to play the Joan Gamper trophy, the 50th edition of the competition.
