Cazorla backs Pique & Del Bosque

Santi Cazorla has backed Gerard Pique and Vicente del Bosque to both continue serving Spain ahead of Sunday’s Euro 2016 qualifier against Belarus.

The Arsenal midfielder was responding to the widespread boos directed at the defender in La Roja’s 2-1 victory over Costa Rica on Thursday and the milestone of his Coach, who is preparing to lead out his country for the 100th time.

“In Leon, we saw a team in shape, ready to compete and at an optimal level to play against Belarus,” he said at a Press conference.

“[Vicente] del Bosque is part of Spain’s history. Hopefully, we win more titles under him.

“I’m playing in a new position, I’m very happy and I’ve adapted very well, although I’ve already played alongside [Sergio] Busquets and Koke [for Spain before]. The most important thing is to help the team.

“There’s a great generation coming through. We’ll be successful again but we must have faith in this group.

“[Pique] is a fundamental player, a great guy and one of the best centre-backs in the world.

“For me, there was no reason for the booing. Everyone can express what they believe in and must be respected for that. I just focus on my club and the national team.

“Before winning our first European Championship, we lacked belief in ourselves. Now, there can’t be any negativity.

“We must be united, positive, believe in ourselves and our successes are sure to come back.”
