Xavi: Lopo’s claims are nonsense

Xavi Hernandez has rubbished Alberto Lopo’s claims that Barcelona “loosened up” in their 2-2 draw with Deportivo La Coruna on the final day of the season.

The Galicians’ captain was quoted as saying that he asked the midfielder to have mercy on his team, with the score 2-1 and Depor heading towards relegation, but the Al Sadd new boy insists there is no way he would have bowed out of Camp Nou without giving maximum effort.

“It’s nonsense. [What Lopo said] neither has rhyme nor reason,” he informed Mundo Deportivo.

“Deportivo scored two goals and and we wanted to go for more goals once they equalised.

“It was my last League match with Barcelona and both my colleagues and I wanted to win.”

Nevertheless, LFP President Javier Tebas has since confirmed that the purported exchange between the pair will be investigated.
