Tebas confirms Barca-Depor investigation

LFP President Javier Tebas has confirmed an investigation into goings-on in the 2-2 draw between Barcelona and Deportivo La Coruna.

It was on Thursday reported that Deportivo defender Alberto Lopo had revealed he asked Xavi Hernandez to take it easy on his side.

The result meant Deportivo avoided relegation, condemning Eibar, who were in turn saved from the drop by Elche’s financial problems.

Barcelona had already won the title and raced into a two-goal lead, only to be pegged back before full time, with the score said to be 2-2 when the alleged conversation between Lopo and Xavi took place.

Speaking to Cadena COPE, Tebas accepted that Lopo may not have been entirely serious with his request to the now-ex Barca captain, but insisted that would be no excuse.

“We’re investigating if what was said is subject to sanction. That’s a phrase that can’t even be said in jest,” Tebas argued.

“One team might try and the other team does nothing. You cannot urge the other team to not make the effort in a sport.”

AS add that Lopo said he advised Xavi that a draw was good for all concerned, but insisted Xavi never offered to settle for a point.

“I told Xavi to loosen up a bit, that a draw was good for everyone,” Lopo is quoted as saying.

“They were 100% competitive and he didn’t tell me they were going to give away the game.

“It’s true Barca were below their usual standard and that helped us.”

AS note that Tebas has told them that the game itself isn’t under investigation, but rather the exchange between Lopo and Xavi.
