Vero Boquete, captain of the Spain women’s national team, has asked for football fans in the country to give the team their support at the World Cup.
La Roja begin their involvement in the competition on Tuesday evening against Costa Rica, and Boquete, a forward who recently signed for Bayern Munich, has been interviewed by AS.
“We’re feeling good. We’re looking forward to getting started. The team is eager and confident to start right,” she said.
“We’ve spent many months studying our rivals, talking about their strengths, what we have to do and what we can’t do. We depend on ourselves, whether we can play our football. That’s how we’ll win.
“There’s no nerves, just desire. We’ve been waiting for this for a long time. We’re not talking days or months, but years. This is the dream of our career. We’ve been playing since we were children and this is the highest level we can aspire to.”
Boquete was asked what she would say to observers, both her family and the country as a whole, in advance of Spain’s World Cup campaign getting under way.
“We’re all very aware and very proud of the support we’re getting. We’re getting a lot of support,” she acknowledged.
“I’d ask the country to give us a chance. This is a football country. We all grew up watching football. This isn’t women’s football, just football.
“Women play just like the men. I hope they give us a chance to show them what we can do.”
Spain, coached by Ignacio Quereda, are in Group E of the tournament in Canada, alongside Costa Rica, Brazil and South Korea.
