Official: Elche out, Eibar in!

Elche have been relegated from La Liga following their failure to convince the LFP of their ability to settle an outstanding tax bill, with Eibar reinstated.

The club presented a guarantee to the LFP last Friday, outlining their commitment to paying a €3.6m debt to Spanish treasury Hacienda, but disciplinary judge Manuel Rivero was wary of their arrangements.

Rivero based his decision on the amount owed to the tax office and the lack of clarity to Elche’s financial planning after July 28, the deadline which the side agreed to meet.

Elche have already made it clear that they will pursue every legal avenue possible to overturn the ruling, but their place in La Liga will be covered by Eibar, the highest-ranked, relegated team.

The Valencians, whom the LFP acknowledge have had previous in such matters, have also been slapped with a €180,000 fine and owe an additional €10m in unpaid wages and debts to creditors.
