Benitez: I’m a cantera man

Rafa Benitez has promised to consider the Real Madrid youth ranks, saying if the players in Castilla are good enough, they’ll be in the first team.

Benitez was confirmed as successor to Carlo Ancelotti on Wednesday and at his first Press conference, acknowledged reports of a meeting with Castilla Coach Zinedine Zidane and gave his backing to the cantera.

“I’m a youth team man, so many years working with young players, I understand how things work,” he said.

“My main responsibility is the first team but that doesn’t mean I won’t have an eye on the youth academy. I had a chat with Zidane and I’m sure we’ll have a good relationship but I have to focus on the first team.

“The other day I saw some youth team players from Castilla and if they’re good enough I’ll try to help them but I’ll coordinate with Zidane.”
