Benitez: If new players come, great

Rafa Benitez has said he will be involved in recruitment for Real Madrid but his main focus is on working with the current squad.

Benitez was unveiled as Carlo Ancelotti’s replacement on Wednesday and at the subsequent Press conference, was asked about his role in the club’s summer signings.

“I’ve been in football for many years and worked in different places, with or without a sporting director,” Benitez began.

“I’m the Coach, I have a squad to work with. The Coach has an opinion and then you look to the club because the club has ideas. I have to work with the team and get the most out of the players. If new players come, great.

“This is the best squad I’ve worked with. So many quality players. As for my style, how I work, how I do things, training 80% with the ball, 20% without, try and control possession during games. I think that’s compatible.

“And we look to technology for help with training. I’ve won trophies thanks to how I work and it’s the main reason I’m here today. You have to adapt to different players but I think you have to play an attacking brand of football.”

It was put to Benitez that the squad had a positive relationship with his predecessor and he was asked what that means for him as the replacement.

“I think that’s positive sign that the players can want to thank Carlo and were very fond of him,” Benitez replied.

“It speaks very highly of the players and one day when I leave the club I hope I can get the same.

“I have a good relationship with Ancelotti, a friendship and a professional relationship. I’m not going to analyse his time here.

“I will try to learn from a few mistakes, everybody makes mistakes, but there’s more positive than negative.”
