Xavi ‘hopes Enrique stays’

Xavi Hernandez has offered his backing to Luis Enrique, saying he hopes he remains as Barcelona Coach.

Barca go for a treble when playing Juventus on Saturday in the Champions League final but despite the success of Enrique’s first season, there remains doubt as to his position.

“I don’t know if he’ll stay. That’s a question for him. I hope he stays because he’s shown what he can do,” the departing playmaker said, AS reports.

“With him, the team have become leaders. We’ve worked hard and overcome our problems. Hopefully he stays. I hope so for the good of the club.”

Xavi was also asked for his thoughts on the possible punishment facing a number of groups for jeering the national anthem prior to the Copa del Rey final between Barca and Athletic Bilbao.

“We’re in a democracy and there is freedom of expression,” he argued.

“I don’t think they should be punished for whistling. You have to ask why it happens, not punish it.”
