‘One of Barca’s best-ever teams’

Gerard Pique believes the current Barcelona squad is one of the best the club has ever had and can win more Champions League trophies.

Barca meet Juventus in the final of this year’s competition and Pique, in a lengthy interview with Mundo Deportivo, believes the age of the players means success can be had over the long-term.

“We’d be satisfied but we have to go for the fifth, sixth, seventh European Cup…I think some of our players have a long future ahead,” the centre-back said.

“If you look at the front three and Lionel Messi is 27, Luis Suarez is 28 and Neymar is 23. That says it all.

“The team has a long journey ahead and we don’t have to stop. We have to do everything in our power and see what happens next year.

“But the goal is the same, to try and win it all, to take advantage of the generation that has unique players such as this.

“We’re used to winning now but there’ll come a time when we don’t, so we have to enjoy the good times.”

Pique added that it’s not only in attack that this is a special Barca side, in his opinion, but across the pitch, adding up to one of the best the club has ever known.

“The attack, the midfield, the defence…the team itself, we have one of the best teams in the history of the club,” he insisted.

“We have a generation of players who have been at the club for many years since they were very young and we’ve been lucky enough to win a lot of trophies. We have to take advantage of them and win as much as possible.”
