Emery deflects future talk

Unai Emery insists he only wants to celebrate Sevilla’s Europa League win, not answer questions about his future.

Emery was inevitably asked about what comes next after Los Rojiblancos retained the trophy against Dnipro amid speculation linking him with Milan, Real Madrid and Manchester City.

In his flash television interview after the final whistle Emery said he was ‘happy’ at Sevilla, although had to be asked four times before answering.

Emery was asked again at his post-match Press conference and offered a circumspect reply.

“This isn’t the time to talk about the future. Long ago I learned one thing, to not live thinking ahead,” he said, AS reports.

“We want to enjoy the moment. Talk about the future of Sevilla in the Champions League, but we’ll think of that in the coming days.

“The first thing is to enjoy these moments as much as possible. The game was marked by the President and Monchi two months ago.

“I have a contract on renewed terms. We’ll talk at the end of the season. I want to enjoy this moment with all Sevilla fans.

“I have to remember my father, who died recently. He pushed me. These are unique, special moments. Thanks to Sevilla, the supporters who enjoy this competition.

“The group has worked hard. We’ve played five finals. This is the latest. They’ve had a great competition and deserved to be in the final. Dnipro were a hard opponent and I congratulate them with sympathy.

“We are happy with what we have and we are ambitious to grow. Winning the Europa League isn’t easy. There is a special chemistry with this competition.

“We want more than we have already achieved – like the Champions League. It’s another step. And then we’ll be happy.

“Winning the League with teams like Madrid and Barcelona is very difficult. Atletico Madrid may be an example, but it’s difficult.

“We were happy with 76 points in the League and that once made you champions, but now it’s fifth. We’ve been alive until the last day of the League and the Europa League and that brings much joy and a lot of emotion.”
