Iker on Ancelotti, Benitez & Mourinho

Iker Casillas has spoken about Real Madrid’s decision to sack Carlo Ancelotti, the prospect of working with Rafa Benitez and his relationship with Jose Mourinho.

Ancelotti was let go on Monday and Benitez is expected to be appointed as his successor, with Florentino Perez saying a replacement will be confirmed next week.

Benitez, currently in charge at Napoli, is to hold a Press conference on Thursday at which his departure is expected to be announced, freeing him to take over at Santiago Bernabeu.

Casillas has conducted a lengthy interview with El Laguero, the conversation taking place on Tuesday night in the Bernabeu goalmouth.

When asked about the club’s decision to remove Ancelotti, Casillas admitted his pleasure at working with the Italian, but didn’t complain about the change.

“It’s a demanding club and the President and the board have made the best decision, but I thank Carlo for what he has done for me, even though last year I was angry as I didn’t play much,” Casillas said, according to AS.

“He is a noble person. Hopefully it goes well for him. I wish him the best – this is his home. We hugged.

“[The players’ opinions] were positive for Carlo. Cristiano has his opinion and a close relationship with the Coach. I understand the message he sent.

“[Benitez] was in charge of the Under-19s and I was in the Under-12s. We met later. I haven’t heard anything to say he’s not welcome.”

Casillas’ kind words towards Ancelotti are a stark contrast to his relationship with Mourinho, who sat on the Madrid bench before the ex-trainer.

“I was injured under Mourinho and my teammate was doing well. That’s the end of it. What is said to journalists after, I don’t care,” Casillas said.

“Ancelotti then decided on Diego Lopez and that was difficult to accept but the season was very good despite the error in the Champions League final. I don’t keep thinking about those. I had good moments.

“Mourinho and I talked before I was injured, when I was on the bench for two or three games. He warned me to put more emphasis on games. They said I was overweight, out of shape…I chose to stay quiet, not make it a circus. I don’t regret it and I’d do it again.

“The relationship [with Mourinho] got worse. When we won the record League I spoke as captain, with respect. Then the relationship was fantastic during Euro 2012. But in September things weren’t the same. And then I was injured.”
