Sergio plays down Celta defeat

Sergio Gonzalez has insisted that Espanyol’s 3-2 defeat to Celta in La Liga on Saturday does not take anything away from their “great season”.

The Galicians came back from behind twice to eventually keep all three points at Balaidos via Nolito’s late strike, despite being forced to play the match with 10 men for over an hour as a result of goalkeeper Sergio Alvarez’s early dismissal.

“[This defeat] doesn’t tarnish my players’ great season,” the Coach said after the game.

“We’re very pleased with the trajectory that we’ve had throughout the season and I’m very proud of the players.

“It’s true that we’re a little sad because we wanted to win here, but it’s been a very good season overall.

“[Praising Celta], they managed to equalise twice, despite going a man down.

“There were times in the second half when they were better than us, but the fairest result would’ve been a draw.

“I’ve experienced some unforgettable moments this season and rate our campaign 8/10.”
