Velasco Carballo to ref Cup final

Carlos Velasco Carballo has been appointed to referee the Copa del Rey final between Barcelona and Athletic Bilbao on May 30.

The 44-year-old will be assisted by Roberto Alonso Fernandez and Carlos Yuste Jimenez, while Carlos Del Cerro Grande and Raul Cabanero will act as fourth and fifth officials respectively.

Velasco Carballo was selected by FIFA to referee at last summer’s World Cup in Brazil, although he attracted heavy criticism for his handling of the host nation’s quarter-final defeat of Colombia.

Despite blowing for more than 50 fouls the Spanish official’s failure to clamp down on indiscipline ultimately led to Juan Camilo Zuniga’s challenge on Neymar, which ruled the Barcelona and Brazil star out of the rest of the tournament.

Madrid-born Velasco Carballo also officiated at the 2012 European Championship in Poland and Ukraine, when Spain retained the crown they had won four years earlier in Switzerland and Austria.
