Mendieta: ‘Ronaldo should work harder’

Former Spain international Gaizka Mendieta believes Cristiano Ronaldo needs to work harder for the good of Real Madrid next season.

Los Blancos have not picked up the La Liga trophy since 2012 and Mendieta, who played for Valencia, Lazio, Barcelona and Middlesbrough, feels Ronaldo’s role within the team needs to change.

“I don’t think he’d be happy. His figures are there and it’s unbelievable what he has done and achieved,” the 41-year-old told Sky Sports News.

“You can’t say he’s failed because of those numbers and figures, but he might have to reconsider.

“He has to think about what if he scored 10 goals less but defender better and helped the team become a better team, rather than just beating his numbers and scoring more goals week-in, week-out.

“Is it down to him? I don’t think it’s down to him but I think it’s down to the coaches and the President,” he insisted.
