Madrid in pot two for CL draw

Real Madrid will be in pot two for next season’s Champions League group draw following their failure to win La Liga or defend their European crown in 2014-15.

Pots were previously decided by a team’s coefficient ranking, but changes made by UEFA in the seeding system mean the champions of Europe’s top seven Leagues, along with the competition holders, will make up the eight teams in pot one.

Consequently, Madrid could face the likes of Chelsea, Bayern Munich or Juventus in the group stage, having last been among the second-pot members in the 2010-11 campaign.

Barcelona, on the other hand, are in pot one thanks to their recent League triumph, while Atletico Madrid’s top-four finish sees them join their city rivals in pot two.

La Liga’s final Champions League representatives are yet to be decided, with Valencia and Sevilla due to battle it out next weekend, although Spain could have five if the Andalucians beat Dnipro in next month’s Europa League final.

Pot one (confirmed): Barcelona, Bayern Munich, Chelsea, Juventus, Paris Saint-Germain, Benfica, Zenit, PSV

Pot two (not confirmed): Real Madrid, Atletico Madrid, Manchester United*, Porto, Arsenal, Valencia*, Bayer Leverkusen*, Manchester City
