Jemez: Rayo want eighth

Paco Jemez has challenged Rayo Vallecano to secure “a more-than-outstanding” eighth-placed La Liga finish next week after Sunday’s 2-1 win at Cordoba.

Goals from Raul Baena and Adri Embarba cancelled out Luso’s strike just before the hour mark and ensured Los Vallecanos stayed in with a chance of matching their best-ever League finish ahead of Real Sociedad on the final day of the season.

“We’ll try to beat Real Sociedad [next week] and finish eighth, which would be more than outstanding,” the Coach said at a Press conference.

“Every season, we shows that we can overcome the expectation of survival with a better objective.

“I knew there would be many adverse conditions, such as the heat, but the lads went the extra mile and went one better than a draw.

“I know we can do much better, but I’m satisfied with the result.

“[The Cordoba fans] were very affectionate towards me [and requested] lots of pictures and signatures.

“I felt very comfortable. They showed me affection in both a sporting and personal sense.

“It’s always a pleasure to see old friends and share these difficult times with them. This is the time that the fans must be around to support the team.

“I noticed changes from the bottom [since I left three years ago, in reference to the new Press and dressing rooms].”
