’Eibar must take more risks’

Gaizka Garitano has admitted that Eibar were afraid of taking risks at Getafe but tipped them to maintain their La Liga status next week.

Borja Fernandez’s 36th-minute equaliser earned the Basques a crucial point at Coliseum Alfonso Perez, meaning the Coach’s side now need to better both Deportivo La Coruna and Granada’s results when they host Cordoba on the final day of the season.

“Ultimately, neither team risked anything in the final minutes,” he said after the game.

“It was better to win, but we’re confident about beating Cordoba and staying up with 35 points.

“We scored and then had all the chances in the second half, but we’ll take the draw.

“We took a point [from this game] and will play Cordoba next, while [Deportivo La Coruna and Granada] have to go to Camp Nou and play Atletico [Madrid], so they won’t have it easy.

“If [our rivals] win, we won’t be able to do anything, but with the matches they have, we have a chance [of staying up].

“We can either go for the win, with the possibility of losing, or go for the draw and hope other results go our way.

“We came out fighting from the beginning, and we started the second half well, but the draw was valuable to them.

“We didn’t play with enough force and weren’t aggressive in attack like them.

“We could’ve taken risks and lost the game, but we can now stay up with a win at Cordoba.

“We knew we weren’t going to pick up another 27 points [in the second half of the season], but we didn’t expect such a bad second half.

“The team are still coming off a bad experience, but they’re fighting until the end. Our chances [of survival] aren’t remote, far from it.

“We’ll see if our injured players [Abraham and Jaime] return this week.”
