Oblak: Atleti not violent

Jan Oblak has rubbished the perception that Atletico Madrid are a ‘violent’ team ahead of Sunday’s encounter with Barcelona in La Liga.

Los Colchoneros have become renowned for their aggressive style of play under Diego Simeone, but such an approach has also come under fire for being excessive at times.

Nonetheless, the goalkeeper feels the criticism is unjust and hopes the match at Vicente Calderon results in an Atleti victory for all the right reasons.

“We’re not afraid [of Barca], but we know it’s not easy to stop them. Still, I hope we play well and do manage to stop them,” he said at a Press conference.

“I don’t know why [Barca] said we were violent. We’re a strong team, but I don’t believe that we’re a violent one.

“Barcelona have many specific qualities and it’s difficult to stop them. We have to play with intensity, be very focused and prepared to run a lot.

“We can beat any team in the world, but it won’t be easy. It’ll be a tough game, so we have to be very strong on the pitch. We’ll see what result we get at the final whistle.

“Our objective [for the season] was to finish third [in La Liga], and [I’m sure] we’ll achieve that. If we succeed [in doing so], it’ll be a positive season.

“I feel great at Atletico. At the start of the season, [Miguel Angel Moya] played [in goal], but the most important thing for me is the team.

“I waited for my chance and now I’m playing. I’m happier and it’s easier for me.

“[On Iker Casillas], it’s certainly not easy when you’re jeered by your own fans, but Casillas can play through it, has shown that he’s in good shape and can play perfectly well.”
