La Liga strike goes ahead…for now

The strike in Spanish football due to take place from May 16 is still on after no progress was made at a meeting on Tuesday.

The Spanish Footballers’ Association (AFE) and the Spanish League (LFP) held an act of formal conciliation following the union’s decision to call the strike, yet after a two-hour get-together there was still no agreement between the parties and, as a result, no football is planned to take place from this Saturday onwards.

The decision to strike centres on a disagreement in the way in which money from the new television rights deal is due to be distributed, while all eyes now turn to the High Court on Wednesday morning.

A judge there must deliberate on a complaint brought by the LFP against the AFE to consider if the strike is illegal and can be averted.

As it stands, there will be no further football in Spain this season. In addition, there is the distinct possibility that any affected matches will not be replayed.
