Jemez: ‘Rayo can still make Europe’

Paco Jemez believes Rayo Vallecano still have an outside chance of making Europe following Monday’s 2-0 victory over Getafe.

A first-half own goal from Emiliano Velazquez and a 73rd minute strike from Miku saw Rayo to a comfortable win over their cross-city neighbours, placing them four points behind seventh-placed Malaga with two games of the season remaining.

“Mathematics tell you that we can still make it into European competition and it’s still not a lost cause,” Jemez told a Press conference.

“Our duty now is to fight for the remaining six points against Cordoba and Real Sociedad, although it doesn’t depend on ourselves and we need others to slip up.

“There is also the possibility of finishing eighth, which would be the best in the club’s history, so that’s a nice challenge.”

Despite his team taking all three points against Getafe, the Rayo boss was not entirely happy with the performance.

“I’m glad the fans had a good time but for me I wasn’t happy with what I saw in the first half. We were very sloppy.

“After the break we played in flashes and it’s true the result favoured us, but overall it wasn’t one of our best games of the season.

“However, we did show at times that we have a lot of talent in this team, although I like games to have a higher tempo.

“We need intensity and freshness but I understand that at this stage of the campaign some players will lack that,” he maintained.
