Spanish Footballers’ Association (AFE) President Luis Rubiales says he remains hopeful of avoiding a strike in Spanish football.
The AFE and the Spanish Football Federation (RFEF) have called the stoppage from May 16 for the final two rounds of fixtures following a dispute over the distribution of television rights.
Rubiales intends to meet with the Spanish Football League (LFP) this week and is cautiously optimistic some kind of agreement can be reached.
“We have proposed an act of conciliation and we hope it’s going to be positive,” he is quoted as saying by El Deportista.
“It’s too early to tell but we are going there with the intention of reaching an agreement over the next few days.
“We are open to this and if the government is telling us we must [come to an agreement] then it needs to be for the benefit of all parties involved and should be implemented.”
Rubiales preferred not to respond to LFP President Javier Tebas’ comments on Monday that any strike would be illegal and considered a ‘joke’.
“Mr. Tebas has said a lot of things about many issues but now is not the right time to answer back.
“It’s time to be serious and to try and solve the problems we’ve seen, which are not our fault.”
