Marcelino hails ‘extraordinary’ season

Marcelino hailed his ‘extraordinary’ Villarreal side after they booked their place in next season’s Europa League against Elche on Sunday.

Joel Campbell’s first-half winner was enough to keep Yellow Submarine in sixth place for a second term, and the Coach was quick to pay tribute to his players after the match.

“The manner in which we competed throughout the year was extraordinary,” he noted.

“I don’t know any other team who have had as many injuries as we did in such little time.

“I’m extremely grateful and proud of this team because it’s very difficult to achieve what we’ve achieved in the League, Cup and Europe.

“I stand by the work of all the players. Some of them even played [against Elche] with an injury, so it adds value to what we’ve achieved.

“I’ll say to the fans to acknowledge the state we competed in against Elche, because they whistled us for some time.

“Two years ago we were playing in the second tier. Now we’ll play again in Europe.

“We knew [the second half of the season] would be difficult, especially because of our physical condition.

“They did everything to win [all season]. Sometimes we were the better team and didn’t win.”
