Montella: ‘Fiorentina are motivated’

Fiorentina boss Vincenzo Montella says the Serie A outfit will not lack motivation for the Europa League semi-final first leg against Sevilla.

The 40-year-old is aware an intimidating atmosphere awaits his players at the Sanchez Pizjuan on Thursday, yet insists that they have the nerve and character to respond to it.

“We know a fiery atmosphere awaits us but we possess players of great strength who rather than be overawed will be further motivated,” Montella told a Press conference.

“Both teams deserved to reach the semi-final and we’ll see what happens, although I don’t think it’s any different playing at home or away in the first leg. I’m sure we’ll see a great game.”

Holders Sevilla are seen by many as favourites to reach the final, with parts of the Spanish media having already written off Fiorentina’s chances, and Montella was asked if that could turn out to be an advantage for the Viola.

“It would’ve been an advantage if their Coach thought that too, but seeing as he is experienced and an expert at communicating with his team beforehand, it won’t be.

“If they’d asked Iker Casillas before the Juventus semi-final he would’ve said he felt Real Madrid were favourites. These are just throw-away comments

“Sevilla are a very complete side who know how to do everything, including Italian-style counter-attacks. As a club they’ve been very successful in recent years.

“We’d like to make this into a fantastic game. Sevilla are not perfect and they have many strengths and weaknesses we have identified.”

Montella went on to reveal that winger Joaquin was providing some insight into Sevilla from his time in La Liga, while he also played under their boss Unai Emery at Valencia.

“We talked about Sevilla and his past, but also about Emery as they worked together at Valencia. We spoke and he gave a bit of advice, but we already knew everything via videos, computers and technology.

“Joaquin cares about this match very much and I’m sure with his character that the emotion of the occasion won’t affect him.”
