‘Strike is an insult to democracy’

Miguel Cardenal, the Secretary of State for Sport, has described the strike called by the RFEF as ‘incomprehensible’ and ‘an insult to democracy.’

The Spanish Football Federation on Wednesday evening released a statement outlining their issues with the government and concluded by calling a strike for all competitions from May 16, for ‘an indefinite period.’

Cardenal has responded, AS reports, by criticising the measure, particularly the federation’s complaints over the new television rights deal that was recently signed into law.

“It is incomprehensible that the RFEF wants to stop football. It’s based on ignorance,” he said.

“[Angel Villar, RFEF President] believes the government has to pay attention to him. What he’s doing is an insult to Spanish democracy and the rule of law.

“The egos of someone has been imposed on the responsibilities of his office. There are some clubs [who didn’t attend the meeting at which the strike was discussed] because they knew what was happening.

“[The TV rights law] gives money where there wasn’t any, to, for example, the women’s game and the Segunda and Segunda B.”
