Ancelotti defends Ramos display

Carlo Ancelotti has leapt to the defence of Sergio Ramos after the Real Madrid star came under fire for his performance at Juventus on Tuesday.

The 29-year-old, a defender by trade, started the first leg of Los Blancos’ Champions League semi-final against the Old Lady in central midfield but struggled in Turin, with much of the criticism levelled at his passing.

However, the Coach refused to criticise Ramos in the wake of Madrid’s defeat and felt none of his players pulled up any trees with the quality of their distribution.

“I think the match could’ve been the better for us,” he said after the game.

“We wanted to have control of the match but were unlucky. We conceded on the counter and we’re not happy about it, but with confidence we can turn things around.

“I think we lacked a little patience. We didn’t start well and it cost us a goal. We improved but we didn’t improve enough.

“[On the topic of Sergio Ramos’ performance], it wasn’t only Ramos. No-one played any precise passes.

“If we play well [in the second leg], we have a chance [to turn things around]. If we lose the ball, [Juve] are dangerous on the counter.”
