‘Elche need to clean up’

Fran Escriba can’t see Elche continuing to beat the odds unless the financial problems dogging the club are resolved.

Los Franjiverdes secured safety for another year by beating Malaga at La Rosaleda through goals from Jonathas and Marko Pasalic, while Javi Guerra claimed a late consolation.

The victory means Elche are out of danger, on the pitch at least, as off-field issues threaten the club’s future.

“This miracle isn’t going to repeat unless the club is cleaned up in every way,” Escriba warned, AS reports.

“The key to the group isn’t two or three strong players, but a group. It’s been a complicated year.

“We hit bottom in Week 17 against Malaga but the team, and I don’t know how, suddenly became much more solid.

“It’s true we’ve had more obstacles than ever, with a team without any money, and still we’ve gone forward and we should be very proud.

“We’ll celebrate with a dinner. We’re not going to do anything different. I’m not one for excesses.”
