Luis Suarez has admitted he could not stop crying after his two goals against England in last year’s World Cup in Brazil.
The Uruguayan was struggling to be fit for the game with a knee injury but returned to condemn the English to a 2-1 defeat in Sao Paulo.
“I don’t remember crying as much as I did after the England game,” Suarez told ‘Canal 10’.
“The night before the game I was in pain but when I arrived at the stadium I told myself to ‘keep going and forget about it’.
“There was more pain during the warm-up but then I scored the two goals, something I’d dreamed of, and even my wife told me I didn’t realise what I had done.
“I embraced Walter Pereira [who helped him recover] for all he had done because nobody thought I’d be able to play.
“Even Barca’s doctors told me I’d be out for eight weeks but within a month I was back playing.
“A lot of people remember what happened against Italy [biting Chiellini] but I risked everything to be at the tournament.”
Suarez disclosed he was also angry to have been on the bench for Uruguay’s opening group game, a 3-1 defeat to Costa Rica.
“When I didn’t play against Costa Rica I wanted to kill [Coach] Oscar Tabarez. We were losing and I couldn’t come on.
“That was the worst thing but he knew I wasn’t ready and I now realise he was being cautious.”
