‘A great night for Madrid’

Emilio Butragueno described Real Madrid’s win over Atletico Madrid as ‘a great night’ and praised Javier Hernandez.

Hernandez scored the only goal of the Champions League quarter-final, netting in the final minutes of the second leg to put Los Blancos into the semi-finals.

“The goal should have come much earlier. In general Madrid have been much better. Oblak kept them in it for 87 minutes,” Butragueno said, AS reports.

“We didn’t give away a chance in the round against a team who compete with pride.

“The crowd was sensational. It’s a great night for Madrid. We all enjoy these unforgettable European nights and with such encouragement it’s easier to beat a team like Atletico. Everyone in the stadium will savour the memory.

“[Chicharito is] an unexpected hero. This is why you always have to be prepared. This was the most important game of the year and he proved to be the decisive player.

“Sergio Ramos in midfield is a decision of the Coach. He had to make a decision with the absence of Luka Modric.”

Butragueno also looked ahead to the semi-finals, where Madrid are joined by Barcelona, Bayern Munich and Juventus.

“Last year it seemed we faced the best team, Bayern, and it was the most comfortable game all season,” he recalled.

“They are three strong rivals, competitive. The important thing is we get players back fit. We’ve met our expectations.”
